Tell us about yourself and how you got here.
After my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, I was incredibly privileged to obtain research fellowships at Harvard, MIT and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). During my time at these institutions, I got to work with preeminent researchers in the field of biomedical optics and cancer diagnostics. However, all good things must come to an end, and as a result it was time for me to leave Munich (the beer halls were no longer allowing me entrance) and begin looking for a job. Vista Dental had submitted a job positing for a Product Development Engineer, and after hearing about an internal project to help detect oral cancer, I was hooked. What I thought was going to be a 1 year stint on my way to a PhD, has turned out to be an incredibly thrilling journey in dental research & design and manufacturing. Over the past 12 years I have become a shareholder in Vista Apex, completed a Master’s degree from Duke University and have been behind numerous innovation breakthroughs.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
Vista Apex has a culture of “if we can conceive and believe, we can achieve”. For me this is my favorite part of my role and what I look forward to every day. Despite being a rather small player in the dental space, Vista Apex has been behind the genesis of advanced: dental restorative materials, electromechanical devices for endodontics and restorative dentistry, and medicaments for root canal therapy. Everyone loves a “David vs Goliath” story, but at Vista Apex we get to live it and introduce products that even our largest competitors are surprised by. Having innovation at our core and being surrounded by top-tiered engineering talent, I am most excited to see what new inventions are in our future as we pivot towards helping key opinion leaders in dentistry come to us to see their ideas come to fruition.
What makes you Vista Apex?
I love doing anything “project” related … from making robotic Halloween costumes, to building a tree house The Swiss Family Robinson would be proud to call home to throwing huge themed birthday parties for my kids (Star Wars was our last one and it included themed drinks – Vaderade and YodaSoda – and food – Wookiee Wings). My passion is to create!
