Dental Etchants

Dental etchants are a standard aspect of restorative dentistry. Typically, the tooth’s surface is not in an ideal state for the application of bonding materials. To improve the strength of the bond between the tooth and the restoration (whether that’s a crown, filling, veneer, etc.) dentists first prepare the dentin or enamel by microscopically “etching” the dentin or enamel with an acidic etchant.

These acid etchants erode the surface at a microscopic level so that, when the bonding material is applied, the bond is much stronger and longer lasting.
